What is English?


English is a West Germanic language. Other West Germanic languages are:

German, Danish, Icelandic, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch...




English was originated from the fusion of some dialects that Germanic settlers spoke.

BRITISH EMPIRE:

In the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th centuries UK dominated an important part of the world:
North America, some parts of central and south America, India, an important part of Africa, and almost all Oceania. For this reason the English language it is spoken in this parts of the world.


Why is English so important nowadays?



English is a very important language and sometimes it is referred to as a international language, but isn't official language in most countries.
It is used for aeronautical and nautical. It is also official language in a many international organizations, including the International Olympic Committee, European Union, United Nations...

2.THE U.K / THE BRITISH ISLES / GREAT BRITAIN
FACTS:
The land area is of 244,100 square Kilometers. From north to south it is about 1,000 kilometers long.

The capital city is London.

Rivers: The UK rivers are not very long. The Severn is the longest river. Beginning in Wales and entering the Atlantic Ocean near Bristol in England.
Other major rivers include the Thames, Trent and Mersey rivers.

National day: In he UK there isn't a national day. But the people celebrate the birthday of the queen of England on 21 of April.

Population: It was is 62,476,000 millions in 2011.

The major cities: Manchester, London, Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Birmingham

The UK busiest airport is London Heathow Airport

The national flower of England is the Rose.
The national flower of Scotland is the Thistle.
The national flower of Wales is the Daffodil.

a. What is the difference between UK, England, Great Britain (GB) and British Isles?
The UK is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wales, Scotland and England, together form Great Britain. Therefore Great Britain and Northern Ireland form UK. England is a country in the UK. The British Isles are occupied by two nations: United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

b. Countries within a country.
In the UK there are four countries: Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.


c. History of the making of the U.K.
The history about how the UK was formed can be seen through the making of the Union flag (the union of three kingdoms: England, Scotland and Ireland (now only Northern Ireland).

Where is Wales?

Wales is in north-west Europe and is part of Great Britain, an island country )and the United Kingdom (UK) . Wales is one of the four parts of the United Kingdom (along with England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland).
The name Wales comes from the Cymraeg word Gwalia, meaning in English "Homeland"and in catalan “patria”.
Wales (Cymru in Welsh) is a mountainous country on the western side of Great Britain.

Government
Wales has not been politically independent since 1282, when it was conquered by King Edward I of England.
Until 1999, Wales was ruled directly from London; that year saw the first elections to the National Assembly of Wales, which has limited domestic powers and cannot make law.
Wales does not issue its own currency and is not in control of any armed forces. These are the powers of the national government of the UK.

Wales is known for its great actors - Richard Burton, and today Sir Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones. Also there are many famous people like David Jones (1895–1974), artist and poet,  Tom Jones a singer borned in 1940 and Laura Ashley  a famous fashion creator.

Traditional Welsh Food


Welsh food is usually made from local ingredients.
Some traditional dishes include laverbread (made from seaweed), bara brith (fruit cake), cawl cennin (leek stew), Welsh cakes, Welsh Rarebit, and Welsh lamb.
A type of shellfish, cockles, is often served with breakfast.

Northern Ireland is in the northeast of the island of ireland. Covering 5,459 square miles about a sixth of the island's total area.

Northern ireland is famous for…

The Giant’s causeway, situated on the Northe east coast of Northern Ireland, is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of ana ancient volcanic eruption.

Governmant

The Northern Ireland Assembly was established as part of the Belfast Agreement (also known as the Good Friday Agreement). The Assembly debates and makes laws, and scrutinises and makes decisions on the work of the Northern Ireland government departments.

Devolution to the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive was suspended in October 2002 and restored on 8 May 2007

Interesting facts
One of the interesting data was the construction of the Titanic in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland.
